Nashiriki Kwa Masikilizano

Active citizen participation for conflict prevention and the stabilisation of fragile areas in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu.

Nashiriki means “we participate” in Swahili. The project that gave this platform its name embodies that commitment: communities taking an active part in preventing conflict and stabilising fragile areas.

On the ground as on the platform, the project connects communities, local authorities and technical partners around a single goal: preventing conflict and responding to it together.

The work is funded by the European Union and carried by a consortium led by the Norwegian Refugee Council with International Alert, alongside the communities themselves. On the platform side, the deployment is led by Justice Plus, the Bunia-based human rights organisation that champions Nashiriki in Ituri and North Kivu.

Peace is built with communities, not just for them

Nashiriki rests on an early-warning mechanism that turns local communities into proactive actors in managing tensions and reducing the risk of conflict.

Project Objectives

Trust, cohabitation, and durable solutions to displacement

General objective: contribute to peace consolidation and stabilisation efforts in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu through the promotion of social cohesion for conflict-affected communities.

01

Collaboration and trust with local authorities

Foster collaboration and trust between communities and local authorities: administrative, judicial and customary.

Expected results

Collaboration and trust between communities and administrative, judicial and customary authorities are improved.

02

Peaceful cohabitation within communities

Foster peaceful cohabitation between the members of the community.

Expected results

Communities are better equipped to understand trauma and to resolve intra- and inter-community conflicts peacefully and durably.

Rapprochement between communities grows around shared interests, interactions and collaboration.

03

Durable solutions to displacement

Facilitate access for vulnerable people to the different options for durable solutions to displacement: return, local integration and resettlement.

Expected results

Access to durable solutions for vulnerable people affected by displacement is facilitated.

The Platform

A community-driven early-warning mechanism

From the software point of view, Nashiriki is a strategic digital platform designed to strengthen social cohesion and contribute to peace consolidation in Ituri and North Kivu.

It channels community reporting of sensitive information through Local Information Relays (LIRs) equipped with tablets: rapid incident reporting, dissemination of alerts tied to local security dynamics, and map-based visualisation of at-risk areas.

These capabilities strengthen coordination between communities, local authorities and technical partners, while guiding responses, mediation and prevention actions.
